Why a Plan is Essential for Your Podcast

Here’s what planning does for your podcast:
Brings clarity: You know exactly what you’re creating and why.
Improves consistency: No more last-minute scrambles.
Aligns your content with your goals: Your episodes directly support your business vision.
Reduces overwhelm: With a roadmap in place, you can focus on execution and creativity.
Planning doesn’t take away from the magic of podcasting—it enhances it.
What Inspired the Strategic Podcast Planning Workshop
The idea for this workshop came from my own struggles as a podcaster. I often found myself asking:

How do I make my podcast work with my business goals?
Why does this feel harder than it needs to be?

205: Why Every Podcaster Needs a Plan: The Workshop I Wish I Had
[00:00:00] Every great journey starts with a moment of clarity. And for me, that moment was realizing how much easier and more fulfilling podcasting could be with the right plan. So today I'm going to take you behind the scenes of why I created this strategic podcast planning workshop. I'm going to share some of the challenges I've faced and my clients have faced.
[00:00:21] And the breakthroughs that have led to this transformative experience.
[00:00:25]
[00:00:25] [00:01:00] Hello, everyone. Welcome back to share strategize and shine. I don't have a problem for you that I solved this week, but. I think I've created a problem. Oh, what are the things that we have been talking about a lot in the membership? And oddly enough that I have been talking a lot with my business coach is. You know, Once you kind of figure out the foundation and your messaging and you've started your podcast, you definitely hit a point where it's like, okay, well what's next. What's the next thing. And I've been working on what that next thing is.
[00:01:40] And it was very funny because today we do Voxer office hours each month in my membership. And today. , someone said, okay, well, You know, we've got the podcast going, we've done 10 episodes. We're loving it. It's fantastic. But we kind of have hit this point where it's not really growing and we're like, what's next? And I [00:02:00] want to start by saying that that's a completely normal place to hit.
[00:02:03] Like when you launch a podcast or you refresh it, there's all this momentum. And then it's like, okay, well, what comes next? And one thing I want to remind you all is that. It is so, so important that you are. Showing up sharing. And getting your podcasts in front of new audiences, whatever way works for you. , and I do that in a variety of ways.
[00:02:27] I participate in bundles. I go on other podcasts. I speak at events. Right now I'm working on. Creating my schedule for Q1. I already have one speaking of, at lined up. Those kinds of things are what is going to help you get in front of new audiences and bring new people into your world. And that's going to allow you to nurture them with your podcast. So just remember that like, Releasing the episodes is not the end game. This thing is supposed to help you nurture warm and it can't do that unless you're actually [00:03:00] getting it in front of people. So. When we talk about this in the membership, we talk about a bunch of different visibility strategies. But we also talk about like, what feels aligned for me, what feels good?
[00:03:14] Like I'm not going to be out there doing a bunch of things that make me uncomfortable or packing my schedule with tons of events. That's just not what I'm here for. And I know that I want to grow my audience intentionally. It's not as important to me to have millions of downloads as it is to have the right downloads.
[00:03:33] And so that's really where I focus my energy and make a plan and start moving forward with it when I can. And when it feels aligned and I'm going to be super honest with you. I'm recording this podcast episode on little to no sleep. And I was actually thinking a lot about those today, as I was sitting down to record, I was like, you know, I've been talking a lot about alignment and space and I'm super tired.
[00:03:57] So I'm gonna record this episode and go take a [00:04:00] nap. But I just wanted to share a little bit of that with you because. I think sometimes we have this feeling that we have to do all the things, and yes, there are things that we need to be doing, but you get to decide how to do them in a way that works for you.
[00:04:13] And that's a problem. And I solved this week.
[00:04:16] So when I first started my podcasting journey, I was very excited. But. I also was very overwhelmed. I don't know if any of you have had this struggle, but I feel like the balance between content creation, audience growth, and like just my bigger business goals, sometimes the balance is off. Right. And it feels like you're either not giving enough to one thing or there's too much going on to focus all at once. But I quickly realized there was a missing piece. And that was a strategy. That felt both practical. But also aligned with my vision. And I'm going to tell you that I really discovered this, not just [00:05:00] in my own podcast, but in working with other business owners who had podcasts as well. And I've been in this game for almost 10 years now. And I have really, you know, I've seen it all. And the podcasting world. And I knew that there had to be a way to bring this all together.
[00:05:18] And that's why I created the strategic podcast planning workshop. I want to give other podcasters the tools and the support. That I wish I had from the beginning. So let's talk about some of those early podcasting challenges that I experienced. And I've also seen my clients experience. I think this is the, probably the biggest one, and that is inconsistency in burnout.
[00:05:43] I know as well as you do that.
[00:05:46] If you do not have a plan, it makes recording so hard. I mentioned in my segment earlier that. I am recording this with little to no sleep. I'm so exhausted right now. Like my eyes just want to close. The reason [00:06:00] why I was able to sit down and record this episode is because I already had it outlined and scripted out.
[00:06:04] And it was on my schedule to record today. And I knew that I could do it because I had already made a plan. When you don't have a plan, that's when you really start to get inconsistent with your publishing. And then your episodes aren't as great as they could be and people aren't listening to them. And you start to get burned out in this endless cycle of last minute, content creation. I've definitely gone through that several times in my podcast journey. And a lot of times when clients come to me, they're at that moment of I'm getting burned out with my podcast because it feels like it's not doing anything for me.
[00:06:40] I'm working. Really hard to get it out each week. What can we do? Another challenge that. Has come up for me at different times in my podcasting journey. And this is actually one of the biggest pieces that I work on my clients with. But that is when your podcast feels really [00:07:00] disconnected. From your bigger purpose. You know, it's one thing to sit and create content day in and day out.
[00:07:06] But if it is not connected to your purpose, It can really feel hard. When it's connected to your purpose, it's a lot easier to sit down and create content. And so understanding that inconsistency, burnout, and purpose really all go together. And that brings me to another challenge that I faced pretty early on. Was, I was pouring my heart. Into my podcast. Uh, or at least I thought it was right. And I was really struggling to see the results. And this has to be the most common complaint I hear from my clients. They start a podcast because they want to share their message.
[00:07:47] And maybe this is you too. You want to share your message. You want to make an impact. You want to disrupt your industry in some way. You want people to see that there is a different way to do things. In fact, I just posted on my [00:08:00] Instagram or real about how like one of the most. Impactful things you can do as a woman is started fricking podcast, because now you are creating a space to share your voice, your beliefs, and.
[00:08:15] You can work at that and you can do that, but you cannot see the quote unquote results that you want to see.
[00:08:22] And when you get into that mode of like, man, I am. Pouring my heart and soul, my time, my money into this thing. And it is not doing for me what I want it to do. That's when we give up. And that's also when we start to feel that burnout, that inconsistency. That disconnection from our bigger purpose. So these were three challenges that. I really wanted to highlight today as we talk about. You know, planning and strategic planning and why it's so important because these three challenges, I feel like are the ones. That are going to keep you. From podcasting and the [00:09:00] longterm. And are going to dare I say, create a pod fade. You don't know what pod fade is.
[00:09:06] It's this phenomenon that we talk about in the podcast industry, where you really get that podcast. You're so excited. You release episodes every week and then slowly but surely it becomes every other week becomes once a month. And then the podcast just dies. And I do not want that for you. Okay, so let's move on from challenges.
[00:09:24] Let's talk about the turning point. When I realized that something needed to change. And one of the first things I realized was that I needed a framework. I needed something that I could work from, to give me a plan, like a way to align my podcast with my business, without losing the joy of creating.
[00:09:44] And that's really the key here. Like I want this podcast to work for me and work for my business, but I want to enjoy the process. I love recording my podcasts. That's why I'm sitting here doing it, even though my eyes just want to close and I've already drank [00:10:00] all my coffee. I love recording my podcast. It does so much for me personally, but it also helps me create so many amazing connections, but that is because everything I'm doing is super aligned with my business mission, vision. And my goal for what I want in the future.
[00:10:18] And it wasn't always that way. I give this example a lot when I first started my podcast about podcasting. This is like back in the day when it was still called Caroline creates. I focused on launching. And why you should start a podcast. And I got really tired of just talking about that because it wasn't aligned with the work I was doing.
[00:10:38] I wasn't just helping people launch podcasts. I was helping people really redefine how they're marketing their business, how they're showing up and sharing their message and their purpose. It was so much deeper than just launching your podcast. And I realized I wasn't attracting the right people. And so that is one. Way that you can see [00:11:00] how the content and that podcast acts. Itself. Isn't necessarily aligned with what you're actually doing in your business. So we switched, we switched gears and I've never looked back and it's been amazing. Strategic planning has really become my secret weapon. It is the thing that makes a difference between putting out an episode and putting on an episode, that's going to have an impact. On my business for my business, for me and for my listeners. And it really has turned my podcast into a powerful tool for growth. I'm going to tell you if you come work with me at any capacity. At some point, we are going to talk about how you are planning your episodes. Because it makes such a difference in how you show up the quality of your content. How you feel, how you sound when you record. I mean, nothing is worse than a last minute episode.
[00:11:57] Am I right? It just doesn't feel good. It [00:12:00] doesn't sound good. I can tell it's last minute your audience can tell you don't feel great about it. So you don't promote it. Strategic planning. Is just really the key. And I just want to drive this home. So. A couple of years ago, I realized that. This really would be a great moment to come together. As a community as a collective and plan together. And I held my first, uh, annual planning workshop is what I call it. And. It was such an impactful workshop. And so I want to tell you a little bit about why I created it. Why we're still doing it. I'm even going to tell you why we're still doing it quarterly inside the membership.
[00:12:44] Okay. So. The strategic podcast planning workshop. I created it because I want podcasters. Like you. To feel supported to have this important when you're working on your, your plan. Right. But I also want you to feel empowered. [00:13:00] So I want you to have the tools that you need, the, the questions you need to answer to make the right decisions for your content creation. I also really love this idea of like, I think strategy is really important, but. Part of what makes strategy work is when there's creativity and personal growth alongside of it. I am a big Testament to strategy and personal growth meeting and just creating something wonderful. This year has been, a journey with my business and. As my business has changed and evolved.
[00:13:37] So has my like personal. Journey my, my growth. My spiritual growth, my growth as a mother, all of those things have been moving in the same direction. And when I add. That. And I'm able to define like how I want to show up how I'm going to share my message to the strategy. Whew. It's magical. It's magical.
[00:13:56] So inside the workshop, we're going to [00:14:00] actually work through my proven framework for goal setting. And how you can use goal setting to help inform your content planning. This is so key when we talk about. You know, actually making money from our podcasts, actually driving clients from our podcast. And so the beginning of the workshop really is like, okay, let's, let's narrow this down.
[00:14:24] What are we trying to do? What are we hoping to achieve with our podcast? And then how can we apply that to specific episodes and create content around that? I'm also got tools inside this workshop for you, because I realized that, you know, just coming and listening to me talk is not what we want to do. So it's actually. A dynamic workshop.
[00:14:44] I ask questions. You answer. You can raise your hand and get feedback. But I also give you tools like my podcast marketing hub template. And a planning work bag. And these are tools that you can only get if you're inside the membership. So coming to the workshop, [00:15:00] Is a really great way to see how this all works. So, what does this all mean for you? It really is more than just a plan.
[00:15:08] You know, planning is important, but it is so much more than a plan. It is a transformative experience. That's going to change the way you approach. Your podcast. And that is when you're really going to see the transformation from something that is a time suck. That I'm not excited to sit down and do to something that I will do, even when I am running on two to three hours of sleep, because I know. That it is aligned with my business and is aligned with what I'm trying to achieve. And it is going to work for me in that way. Okay. So if you're ready to take control over podcasts. And align it with your big, beautiful vision that you have for your life and for your business.
