What is Your Podcast's Mission?

This often gets overlooked when you are starting a podcast and I think it is so so important! You need to be able to have something to go back to and measure all of your decisions and choices against as your podcast grows. We’ve started having our Launch Intensives work on this specifically because it is so impactful to developing and sustaining a podcast long-term.

What am I talking about is your Mission Statement. Do you have a mission statement for your podcast? You probably have a description but how can we refine that?

Here is a little exercise for you to start really digging into your podcast’s mission:

1. Write down words that come to mind. Think about your podcast and listeners. What words would they think of? 

2. Why are you starting this podcast? What is the heart of your motivation? Really ask yourself why. What are you trying to accomplish?

3. Niche down even more. Thinking about your niche and diving deeper can really help you create content and get to the heart of your podcast. 

4. Who is your target audience? I used to hate this exercise but it can be really impactful. Think about exactly who you are trying to reach? Picture them and write down their likes, dislikes, etc. 

Once you get all these written down you can start to see some overarching themes and pull those together to make a mission statement. You don’t have to share it. Print it out, put it on your wall or somewhere you can reference when you are deciding on guests and episodes.

Or, you can use it to craft the description for your podcast and even help you write your trailer and intro. See why this is such a great exercise?
