064: 3 Ways to Add Video to Your Podcast Strategy

But here's the thing, if you're recording video any ways in which a lot of us are using Zoom or something similar to record our podcast episodes, why not use that video? And it's not that difficult if you know how to edit a video or something you can outsource to take that video and package it, make it pretty put it in a form that is good for YouTube. Now, it's interesting because I think that my initial reaction to this was, well, why would somebody watch it on YouTube versus listen to it? But I think this is one of those situations where you have kind of two different audiences. There are people who love to watch podcasts.

Welcome to the Wild Home Podcast, where we talk about podcasting, life and all the wild in between. Join me, Caroline, every week as I share a peek into the world of podcasting and my wildlife as well. Ready. Let's get into it.

Hi, podcasters, and welcome back to the Wild Home Podcast. I am really excited to talk about today's topic. This is something I've been thinking a lot about. I love podcasting because it is not on video. Let me just let me just say that I love that I can sit down no matter what I look like and record and get a podcast episode ready to go.

Now that being said, I do think that video is important. I don't think, you know, part of me wants to say it's becoming important, but I think it's it's been important for a while. But I think what is important is that we are able to incorporate it into our podcasts and marketing strategy in a way that works for us.

And so in this episode, I'm going to be sharing three ways to add video to your podcast strategy. But I really want to say like it's important that it works for you, that you have the time, the energy, you know, whatever the thing is, that you need to be able to do it like, don't just add it in because you think you need to.

I tried to do YouTube videos years ago. I mean, I'm talking like four or five years ago. And as fun as it was, it just did not make sense for me, for my life. I felt like I was spending so much time doing it. I was at the time like doing these very produced videos, fixing my hair, doing makeup, sitting down like having the camera, recording it, you know, having a script like, you know, right underneath the camera. So I could read it. And it was great and it was fun. But it wasn't me and it didn't feel right. And so I stopped doing it, and that's totally OK. And so I just want everybody to put that in the back of your brain as we have this conversation about video because I'm going to give you some ideas and just know that these are not must dos. These are some things that you can do if you're thinking about adding video to your to your strategy.

So why would you want to add video? Well, I think video is a really great way for people to connect with you, and we're finding more and more that listeners want to connect in multiple places, right? So they don't just want to hear you on the podcast and they don't just want to get your email. Sometimes they want to see what you look like, and video is a great way to do that. But I also think if you go back a couple of episodes, I did an episode on some creative ways to share your podcast. I think it's important that we're constantly coming up with new ways to connect with our audience, and I think video is one of those ways that's a really good way to create that connection.

And the three ways that I'm going to share today or not, and I'll be all. There's so many more things you can do. And again, if you go back and listen to that episode on creative ways of sharing, you know, it's important to to find something unique that resonates with you and your listeners. So let's dove into some of my ideas. And then after you listen to the episode, if you have more ideas, I would love to hear them.

So of course, the first thing I'm going to say are video clips or audiograms. So we've all seen the audiograms with the waveform and there's like a little audio clip and a graphic. But what I'm loving and seeing from some people that seem to be doing a little bit better than the static image audiograms are when they actually use a clip from a video, from a video of the interview or just a video of them recording the podcasts and they use that to in the audiogram. And so when you go on somebody's social media, you might see these and it's just a quick little video clip with some captions and maybe some a title on it or something like that. Maybe a little graphic, I don't know. And it just gives you kind of a sneak peek into the episode. And I love that. I love this idea of like having a little teaser about what the episode is about.

I do this with my podcast episode, and I don't do video because I am not set up for that just yet. But I think it's coming. But I do do the audio, Graham and I just I love it because I don't know about you guys. But like, I feel like there's kind of this evolution of social media, and I am no expert by any means. Like do not even. I just I don't know anything about Instagram or Facebook or anything.

But what I do know is that we've kind of moved from the static image, right? I mean, now we've got reels and all these other things. And so I feel like throwing something in the feed like an audiogram that's an actual video clip is going to get people's attention, and that's what we want to do right?

Now some other ideas, and I love these for kind of expanding upon what the podcast episodes were about. So there are some clear like things you can do, such as like stories on Instagram. But here are some other things that I think are really cool. One is like doing a live based on the podcast episode. If you have a guest, this is a really good way to get people excited about the guests that you're having on your podcast. Maybe you guys do alive and pull out a snippet, something that you regret your you talked about on the episode or you're going to talk about and talk about it on the live.

Now I like to push this even further and say, OK, we're going to do this after the episode, and it's going to act as a Q&A about the episode. I love it when we can tie everything together. I think it's really cool because it creates really engaged listeners. And so let's say your episode comes out on a Tuesday and then every Thursday you do a live Q&A about that week's episode. So I think that just kind of gives something like for people to look forward to. If you are doing episodes that have a lot of action items or strategy in them, kind of like my podcast as it's a really good venue for people to ask questions.

Another way you could do this is going live like in a community that's just for podcast listeners, right? And then going beyond that, you can also simply record videos that have to do with the podcast. So maybe, you know, I'm going to talk about YouTube in a minute, so maybe I make a short video that's all about YouTube and how to use it as a podcaster, kind of expanding on what I'm going to talk about in this episode, and I post that somewhere. The cool thing about that is so now we've we've related it to the podcast, and now we can also share about that in other places and ask people to go watch the video, right? So it's just this big circle.

I have this flow chart that I like to share in my courses and workshops I do where I kind of talk about how everything starts when the podcast episode and then stems down from it. And we can kind of just write this right in there, right videos. Because as long as they're relating back to the podcast episode, if somebody happens upon it, they may go listen to the podcast episode or somebody from the podcast episode is going to go watch your video and then do that other thing that you want them to do. So it's just it's like big circle, right? And then the last way that I'm going to mention today about using video for your podcast is pretty self-explanatory, but I want to talk about it for a minute and a little bit of the process, and that is having a video podcast.

OK, so what does that mean? I just want to tell you right now we have been getting tons of requests at Wild Home Podcasting seeking to do video editing, and I really think that this is something that people are moving more into. Now we've always had people who will either livestream their podcast episodes. Well, there is another way you can use video or record them and post them to YouTube, but then also take the audio from that and create an audio version.

My focus, of course, is on the audio version of that. We've been doing audio podcasting for what is it over six years now? And so that to me, is always going to be most important because I'm a purist and I love the audio format. But here's the thing if you're recording video anyways, which a lot of us are using Zoom or something similar to record our podcast episodes, why not use that video? And it's not that difficult if you know how to edit a video or something you can outsource to take that video and package it, make it pretty put it in a form that is good for YouTube.

Now, it's interesting because I think that my initial reaction to this was, well, why would somebody watch it on YouTube versus listen to it? But I think this is one of those situations where you have kind of two different audiences. There are people who love to watch podcasts. And I have seen it work really well for some of our clients who do this. And so they will literally have the audio in the video for the podcast will prepare the audio and the video and then the video. The audio will go up at the same time and then you can even like, embed that video in your blog post and invite people to either watch it or listen to it. It gives people options, right?

And so there's just kind of a neat thing, I think, especially if you are wanting to expand your audience, it's something that I am wanting to try again, I'll be quite honest. So I did the whole, like, you know, produced YouTube videos a while back. And I mean, it wasn't all bad. It was good and I got some traction. But the process just wasn't for me. But I could see this working for me because it's not too much of an extra step as far as, like actually recording. I mean, it's just having the video on which I don't have the video on right now. So this episode will not be in video form, but it's coming. Stay tuned.

And so again, the benefit being that we're reaching another audience, and I think that's that's really the benefit, right? When we talk about why we would even want to add this is to reach a different audience than what we already have. I think, too, it's good to kind of shake things up every once in a while if you've been doing the same kind of social media post, if you've been doing. A same way of sharing your podcast and you feel like you're not getting any traction, sometimes it's good to like shake things up a bit. Change up the email newsletter or change up the posts, whatever it is, and you can add a little video aspect to it. And it's going to add a little judge, a little something, something to it and to your process and to what your listeners are able to engage with, right? Because that's the whole point of this is we want to engage with our listeners, we want to get them involved. We want to get them excited. And I think video sometimes can really help do that.

So these are things that I have been mulling over and thinking about in my business. And these are also things that I've been having conversations with other podcasters about. And these are things that I've seen people doing, things I did not include on here as TikTok because I have not figured TikTok out. And if you would like to help me figure that out. But I do think what is cool is I have seen some podcasters. So when I talk about the video podcasts, they are actually taking a clip of the video podcasts and posting that on TikTok. And I think that works really, really well. And so, you know, I think as the world evolves, as social media evolves, as podcasting evolves, I feel like we kind of went from video podcasts to like regular podcasts. And now I think video podcasts are starting to come back. And so just think about what would make the most sense for you if you wanted to add a video component. It could be something as easy as doing stories on Instagram or a quick live video, or it could be something as complex as adding a YouTube component.

So I would love to hear your thoughts and maybe what you're seeing other people do, and you can hit me up on Instagram @WildHomePodcasting, or you can email me hello@wildhomepodcasting.com. And yeah, I would love to have more conversations about video and podcasts because I just I feel like there's so much here that we can talk about. So be sure to let me know what's been working for you, what maybe you're thinking about, and I will catch you on the next episode.
